I sit atop the roof of an abandoned apartment complex, my feet hanging over the edge.

The height is invigorating. I know that one little shift could send me toppling over the edge. I could fall down the many stories, wind whistling all around me, and then it would be over. I am high enough that such a fall would be the end of me, and while this is frightening I find myself enjoying the challenge. Perhaps its because I am so far from the ground I almost feel a weird type of freedom.

The scream splinters up into the night air.

I shoot into a sitting position. My throat is aching from my own screams, and all around me the sound of it echoes. My hands shake as I pensively wait for the results.

Slowly the last remnants of my howl fade away, leaving behind silence and shadows. The wasteland of derelict machinery is frozen in the blackness, turned to obscene monsters by the opaque ink of the dead of night. What little light is given off by a half moon serves only to distort my surroundings into a horrifying landscape that causes me a deep seated panic. Here in the echoes, madness grows.

I can feel it all around me, whispering sweet nothing's in my ear. Insanity tantalizes me, coerces me. Trust me, it says, I can save you from that dismal world. You wander alone, so why not give in? You no longer have anything to fight for. Let your guard down, it'll be okay. Everything will be alright.

It's tongue is silver, its treacherous ideas designed to subdue me into its barbed embrace. It sings to me of a false safety, persuading me to believe it can protect me from the outside world. The chaos grasps greedily for me, desiring to claim me as yet another victim of its poison. It hands

A girl, alone atop the roof of a deserted building, gazed up at the beautiful, midnight skies.

The deep expanse of navy blue lay like a lush, silk blanket over the entire city. It's dark, shadowy color was calm and silent, a never ending swathe of stillness that stretched into the abyssal corners of the night. It was a far, glacial thing, so foreign, so alien, that everything that lay below its domineering expanse seemed small, and insign

I often wonder if you miss it,
If you feel the bite of those old times,
Though it does sound silly, I admit.
But do you ever look back sometimes,
And smile at the boy who sang of hate,
Who dreamed of a home for the outcasts,
Do you remember that younger you,
As he wrote his own fate
